Chapter Eleven

Sam took her time releasing her seat belt as she stared at the outside of Mitchell’s farmhouse. The air-conditioning, on at full blast, blew her bangs off her forehead and helped cool her overheated skin. It had been two days since she’d been shot at and rappelled down the side of a skyscraper—and had shared a kiss with Mitchell. Did it change their relationship? That would assume she and Mitchell shared something outside a working capacity. Were they even at a friendship stage? Their talk around her kitchen table the other night was the closest she’d gotten to the heart of the man.

But what did any of it mean? His words from when he’d looked at her manuscript rang in her ears, “If guys want a kiss, we just take it and let you girls figure out what it means later.” She uttered a small sigh. What if a girl didn’t know what the heck a kiss meant?

“Samantha, if you glare any harder at the darn wall, it might burst into flames.”

She glanced at her father. Once he’d found out her destination, he’d volunteered to accompany her. She didn’t know if it was for protection, curiosity or the promise of free food. “Sorry. Just thinking, I guess.”

“Anymore ‘thinking’ and the top of your head will explode right off.” He exited the car and slammed the door behind him.

“Probably so.” She turned off the ignition, removed the key then left the relative safety of the vehicle, remembering to pull her purse after her. The humidity slapped her in the face. It was what she liked to call “face-melting hot.” Too bad she’d spent the extra fifteen minutes and put on a touch of mascara and lip gloss. If she spent too much time outside, no doubt there’d be nasty black streaks beneath her eyes.

Holy cow, I even put on a spritz of perfume. What is wrong with me?

Never had she been so confused regarding a guy before. Why couldn’t male/female interaction be as easy as it was in romance novels? That thought brought her up short and she paused halfway to the porch. Maybe that’s what was wrong with her manuscripts. The romantic relationship was too easy. No conflict. No one had to beat the odds. None of her characters had to overcome obstacles. “Darn it.” Now here she was, stuck at a dude-heavy barbeque and without one of her notebooks. Well, scratch that. She had the small one, but it was only good for jotting down quick notes, not writing out longhand paragraphs.

“Sam, you’re dawdling.” Her father had gained the porch. He knocked sharply on the screen door.

“I know,” she said in a sing-song voice. Taking her flowing, pink-hued top in hand, she pumped the fabric a few times to encourage air movement. “Why can’t there be a freak storm that brings in rain and cool temps?” By the time Sam joined him, Mitchell had the door opened and her father was inside. “Hi,” she said as she squeezed by him.
